Aquifer - a rock layer that is permeable to the flow of groundwater in amounts that are usable to population.
Water deficit - the difficulty of obtaining sources of fresh water for use because of depleting resources.
Water surplus - a quantity of water that is available in excess - this mostly applies to countries that have more than enough water resources.
Abstraction - the act of withdrawing or removing, for example water.
Water balance - the balance between inputs into a drainage basin and outputs. (important for understanding processes operating within a drainage basin and water balances throughout the year).
Porous - rocks etc that have the ability to store water in pore spaces eg chalk
